Matthew Doherty

Statement

My art explores the ability of light to convey a sense of the magical. Emerging from the intersection of sculpture, performance, and design, I am seeking to address the issue of connection in the modern world.

Biography

Matthew Doherty was raised near the woods and farmland of Southern Massachusetts. After studying Post Modern Literary Theory, Studio Art, and Theater at the University of North Park in Chicago, IL, he began his professional artistic career designing costumes, sets, and lighting in the theaters of Providence, RI. Upon moving to Boston, MA he transitioned from theater to lighting live music, working with such artists as Ani DiFranco, Jack Johnson, Paul Simon, Megadeth, Juan Luis Guerra, Old Crow Medicine Show, and Les Claypool. In 2007, Matthew left live production to explore digital media and design, working as a graphic designer, animator, and user experience designer. His art combines his love of mythology and storytelling with the technical production knowledge learned in the theater and the digital capabilities of recent design work. He currently lives in Maine with a flock of wild turkeys.
